Common Orthodontic Issues

Here at Fairbanks Orthodontic Group, we specialize in assisting patients with common problems that they may be experiencing. We are proud to help patients in Fairbanks and the surrounding communities.

Orthodontic treatment is important when a person’s teeth or jaws do not align properly. If this issue is left untreated, malocclusions and speech difficulty can occur, along with premature wear of the teeth. You can even damage your protective enamel, and there is an increased chance of injury to the teeth or jaw. This is why orthodontic care can be very beneficial.

There are various types of common problems that we assist with every single day. First, many people deal with an underbite. An underbite is characterized by the lower jaw extending out too far. This causes the bottom front teeth to sit in front of the upper front teeth. Having an underbite can create a “gummy” smile, protruding lips, and excessive incisor wear.

Second, a malocclusion occurs when the upper teeth are sitting inside of the lower teeth. This can cause tooth stratification and misaligned jaw growth. When patients have malocclusions, they must move their lower jaw forward or to the side in order to close their mouth.

Next, an upper front teeth protrusion is when the function of your teeth are impacted by this type of bite. It is characterized by the upper teeth extending too far forward or the lower teeth not extending far enough forward.

Another issue can be crowding. This is when the teeth do not have sufficient room to erupt from the gums. This is the most common reason for braces. Crowding can cause your teeth to be crooked as well as many other periodontal problems. Dental decay is common because it is harder to clean your teeth.

Spacing can be a big problem for your mouth. Problems with spacing are often caused by missing teeth and excessive jaw room for the size of the erupting teeth. Spacing is also another reason that you may need braces.

An open bite is when the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap. Open bites can be caused by tongue thrusting or thumb sucking.

Lastly, dental midlines that do not match are evident when the back bite does not fit and match properly. This will negatively impact your jaw function and dental function.
